A picturesque period cottage that is so conveniently located in Southover High Street, with highly adaptable accommodation that is fastidiously maintained and beautifully presented throughout.
This fine period home is believed to have origins dating back to 1750 when it was originally interconnected with the two adjacent cottages to form a Farriers Yard. Located close to the many amenities Lewes has to offer there is a local store close to hand all with in a conservation area, however, without being grade listed.
The cottage has been extended over the years with, most notably, the addition of a kitchen extension in the 1930’s and the conversion of the loft into a large dormer bedroom which is now the master bedroom.
The property was owned during the post-war period by Michael Sadler, one of the founding members of the first SAS battalion who fought in North Africa during the war.
The current owners have lived in the property since 2009 and extensively modernised it to create a modern and well appointed home whist respecting the original features of the building. The changes have included adding secondary glazing to all windows, refitting the kitchen including raising the ceiling height by a metre to increase space and storage as well as 50mm ceiling insulation and under floor insulation. The ground floor living room wall has also been soundproofed for added comfort and privacy.
The property has a large garden for the size of house which has recently been hard-landscaped and a separate garden studio (fully insulated and powered) added in 2017 creating an additional room for use as a home office, play room or reading room. The garden includes a useful right of way through the neighbour’s paved garden thereby providing direct access to Southover High Street. This was added to the deeds in 1945.
Situated close to Anne of Cleves House with Grange Gardens, Southdown Sports Club and Lewes mainline station (65 minutes to Victoria) within five minutes walk. The historic county town of Lewes offers many individual specialist shops along with major supermarkets including Waitrose and Tesco, three screen cinema and schooling for all ages.
